Inquiry Learning and Inquiry Arc Framework

Inquiry Learning and Inquiry Arc Framework

Learners practice critical thinking, investigation, exploration and research using a variety of sources that they evaluate for credibility and bias.

Defining Inquiry Learning

The heart of the IL SS Standards (informed by the C3 framework) lies in the Inquiry Arc and serves as a framework that supports the realization of our standards in practice. The Arc focuses on the nature of inquiry and the pursuit of knowledge through essential questions.

The Inquiry Arc Framework also recognizes the important role that the Common Core State Standards for ELA/Literacy play in defining K-12 literacy expectations, specifically, the Inquiry Arc promotes social science instruction to connect to and elaborate on the ELA/Literacy Common Core Standards for social science inquiry.

  • Question Formulation Technique: The QFT is a powerful strategy that teaches students how to ask their own questions and evaluate the role, purpose, and quality of questions. This strategy should be used throughout an inquiry
  • Timeline of Learning: This metacognitive strategy supports the progression of student thinking and evolution of learning throughout an inquiry. Students drive documentation placed on the timeline by considering the new information or perspectives that inform their thinking around the essential question over time. You can use this strategy as a whole class activity, in small groups, or individually.
